Distributor Noise

Q: I’ve been having some distributor noise, what could be the cause of this?

A: In most cases, the distributor should last for the life of your jeep, but unfortunately this is not always the case. Here are two things that could be causing the noise and what you should do.

Remove the distributor cap and inspect everything to see if there are any signs of wear. If you see parts that look like they have been rubbing, it’s possible that the parts were installed incorrectly.

Also, look closely to see if there is clay-colored dust inside the distributor cap.

If the parts were installed incorrectly, replacing them could resolve the problem.

Another cause of distributor noise could be from the bearings wearing down in the distributor. If this is the case you would need to replace the entire distributor.

You can usually check this by removing the distributor cap and holding the top of the shaft and try moving it back and forth. If there is any play in the shaft then you have found the problem.

If you end up having to replace your distributor, it is always wise to also replace the cap, rotor, plugs, and plug wires.
