Choosing the Right Jeep Tires for Your Jeep

The jeep tires on your vehicle are your one single link to the trail.

If that statement sounds daunting, that’s because it is. Think about it. You can have the most sophisticated machine, a powerful engine, the most elaborate suspension and every other automotive widget ever manufactured but if your tires are not suited to your jeep, it will all be for naught.

When choosing your Jeep tires it is essential that you pick the tires that best fit your rig. There are several things to consider when choosing tires.

In general, increasing Jeep tire size can greatly increase the off-roading capabilities of your rig. Larger tires provide increased total ground clearance, increased traction footprint and flotation, make obstacle climbing easier and simply look better.

However, larger tires are more expensive and may require you to upgrade your suspension as well for proper clearance.

Larger tires can also require you to change or upgrade your axles, u-joints and drive shafts. It can also call for increased braking power. So while bigger tires are definitely better for off-roading, you may have to spend a little more for them.

One of the tires that some offroaders like is the Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Radial. A very radicial off road tire that will get you through just about any off road obstacle.

Although it is considered a truck tire, it is a very popular jeep tire amongst jeepers.

Here is a short video that tells you a little more about the Baja Claw Radial and shows it in action.

You can get the Baja Claw at most tire stores or you can go to JC Whitney and get them there. Just do a search at JCW for Baja Claw to see them.

Tire width can also affect your choice of tires. Wider Jeep tires increase footprint, which leads to increased traction and flotation. However, narrower tires may be the best option where the traction is located just a few inches below the surface. This is the case with shallow snow or muddy roads.

Another off road tire you may want to consider is the Mickey Thompson Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ Radial Tire. It is an all terrain tire with aggressive traction that also runs very well on the highway.

JC Whitney has the Mickey Thompson Baja Radial Tires and they come mounted on AWC Black Soft Wheels.

Tread patterns of tires are another factor that can influence your choice. The most popular tread pattern for off-roading is a mud terrain pattern. Unfortunately these tires run rough and loud on the highway so you may be better off with another type of tread pattern if you are looking for a quieter ride.

When choosing your Jeep tires it is essential that you pick the tires that best fit your rig, and the type of off-roading that you do most.

One of the more popular choices among my hunting and jeep friends is the Interco Super Swamper Bogger Tires. The Super Swamper has a patented three-stage lug design that gives you supreme traction under the toughest of conditions.

The tread design, which consists of short, intermediate and long lugs are arranged to give you the ultimate traction, and are also self-cleaning.

Don’t forget to pick up some cool Jeep-Wheels to go along with your new tires.

If your planning on going with larger tires, you will need to install a Jeep Lift Kit
